Johnson & Johnson and Luzenac, a talc mining company, funded a study that purported to show that exposure to talcum powder does not cause ovarian cancer. News about the pharmaceutical giant’s role in funding the 2008 study came to light last week during a lawsuit filed by 22 women who were diagnosed with cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products. Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $21.7 million in California asbestos talcum powder lawsuit

Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $21.7 million in damages in a California lawsuit filed by a woman who was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer. The lawsuit alleged that exposure to asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder product caused the women to develop mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. A jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson and Imerys Talc America to pay $117 million in damages in a lawsuit filed by a New Jersey man who was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer after years of using Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products. The lawsuit accused the two companies of failing to ensure that the talc used in Johnson’s Baby Powder, Shower to Shower, and other talc brands was asbestos-free. (more…)

Missouri judge upholds $110 million talcum powder verdict against Johnson & Johnson

A judge in Missouri has upheld a $110 million verdict awarded to a Virginia woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer linked to the of talcum powder products sold by Johnson & Johnson. The verdict in the case had been called into question following a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that imposed stricter standards for lawsuits filed by out of state plaintiffs. (more…)

A retired Harvard pathologist testified at a recent court hearing that a woman who died from ovarian cancer had talc particles in her ovaries. Dr. John Godleski – a retired pathology expert who taught at Harvard University – was called to testify as part of a lawsuit filed on behalf of a woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. An Illinois woman has filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and Walgreens. The lawsuit alleges that Andrea Harris developed ovarian cancer after years of using talcum powder products manufactured by Johnson & Johnson for feminine hygiene. FDA launches study to examine talcum powder-ovarian cancer link

The Food and Drug Administration recently announced that it will launch a new research study to examine the link between cosmetic products, baby powder, and other products containing talcum powder and an increased risk of ovarian cancer. The FDA said that the new study, funded by the agency’s Office of Women’s Health, was being conducted because the links between talc and ovarian cancer “have not been adequately investigated.” (more…)
