Imerys Talc reaches settlement on the eve of trial in J&J talcum powder mesothelioma lawsuit

Imerys Talc America – which supplies Johnson & Johnson with talc for Johnson’s Baby Powder and other products – has reached a settlement on the eve of trial with a woman who alleges she developed mesothelioma cancer from exposure to talcum powder. The lawsuit, filed by California resident Carolyn Weirick, will proceed to jury deliberations with Johnson & Johnson as the sole defendant. (more…)

Johnson & Johnson hid role in funding talcum powder-cancer research

Johnson & Johnson and Luzenac, a talc mining company, funded a study that purported to show that exposure to talcum powder does not cause ovarian cancer. News about the pharmaceutical giant’s role in funding the 2008 study came to light last week during a lawsuit filed by 22 women who were diagnosed with cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products. Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $21.7 million in damages in a California lawsuit filed by a woman who was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer. The lawsuit alleged that exposure to asbestos in Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder product caused the women to develop mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure. A jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson and Imerys Talc America to pay $117 million in damages in a lawsuit filed by a New Jersey man who was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer after years of using Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products. The lawsuit accused the two companies of failing to ensure that the talc used in Johnson’s Baby Powder, Shower to Shower, and other talc brands was asbestos-free. (more…)

Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay more than $110M in damages to a Virginia woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using the company’s talcum powder products.
